The design was unique for its time because of a diagonal cross-bracing of the skeleton that contributed considerably to the structural strength. Paul Revere forged the copper spikes and bolts that held the planks in place and the copper sheathing that protected the hull. Armed, Constitution first put to sea July 22, 1798 and saw her first service patrolling the southeast coast of the United States during the Quasi-War with France. By early 1812, relations with the United Kingdom had deteriorated and the Navy began preparing for war. Captain Isaac Hull put to sea July 12, without orders, to prevent being blockaded in port. Captain Hull and the Constitution met up with one of their British pursuers one month later, the HMS Guerriere. The Constitution damaged the HMS Guerriere so severely that it was not worth towing to port. Present day, the USS Constitution is berthed at Pier 1 of the former Charlestown Navy Yard at one end of Bostons Freedom Trail. She is open to the public year round, though a visit to Old Ironsides is subject to Navy provisions and the fact that she occasionally puts out to sea.
